A tour of the facilities followed by training seminar was held at School of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering, Alma Mater Studiorum – University of Bologna. The seminar focused on fundamental tests and equipment for civil engineering projects, products and infrastructure. The group discussed various attributes and commonalities between traditional bituminous and aggregates with alkaline activated cementitious materials, and mine wastes. The project consortium viewed and discussed different tests for hot mix asphalt, cold mix asphalt, cement bound mixes with bituminous emulsion and cement with reclaimed asphalt, among others. As well, in conjunction the project consortium viewed, discussed and were demonstrated different tests and equipment for measurement of asphalt properties in situ. Finally, the working group also had the first opportunity to view and test a newly developed paving system using light weight alkaline activated mortar with a cork surface coating.
